Books About The South
from Southern Living
by Lauren Rippey
November 2005
The latest literary trend harkens back to ancient oral tradition. This Atlanta-based quarterly audio magazine combines fiction, poetry, and music from many of the country's best writers.
The inaugural issue features works of eight writers--read by the contributors themselves. "Alvin's Wild Ride" is an excerpt from an unpublished novel by Pulitzer prize winner Robert Olen Butler. Marjory Wentworth, poet laureate of South Carolina, reads six poems, including "Something Burning" and "Dancing Barefoot in Atlanta."
This debut collection concludes with two haunting readings that were recorded by James Dickey two months before his death: "Wayfarer" and "The Sheep Child."
Verb is available at major bookstores or online at www.verb.org for $19.95 per issue or $50 for a year's subscription. It can also be purchased as a download from www.audible.com.
